The 3-day workshop will introduce and train participants on the state of the eDNA field and use of environmental DNA (eDNA) for biomonitoring water ecosystems, with a focused application on water quality assessment and biodiversity studies. Instructed by research teams currently working on eDNA projects on Ecuador in the application and development of eDNA techniques. You will learn the basis, application and the use of this emerging technology.
At the end of the workshop, it is expected that you have a better understanding of what is eDNA and how it can be applied for sampling and study water environments. You will also gather hands-on experience on the sampling and laboratory techniques needed to perform an eDNA analysis.
Objective of the Workshop:
The aim of the workshop is to introduce the participants on the applications of environmental DNA (eDNA) for the water quality assessment and environmental health of water bodies. During the course, we will discuss the state of the art of the eDNA studies and applications, field sampling techniques for water quality parameters and biomonitoring and laboratory techniques for metabarcoding studies on eDNA. This workshop intends to bring together the VLIR Network Programs of Biodiscovery and Water Management with the South Initiative projects of IKIAM, ESPOL, HOGENT and UGent.
